Recycling Tips

Here are some helpful hints that will make recycling at Georgia Tech easier:

For Housing

  • Place two trash bags into your container, use one for paper products, the other for plastic, glass and aluminum cans.
  • Rinse out all bottles before placing them in your bin
  • Crush plastic bottles and aluminum cans so you can collect as many as possible without having to empty your container so often.
  • Reuse plastic grocery bags to collect bottles and cans

For General Campus

  • Collect aluminum cans and paper in your desk-side container.
  • Store a plastic grocery bag by your desk for plastic and glass bottles; when full, take to the closest satellite collection site.
  • Reuse  paper as much as possible.  The back side of computer paper is great for taking notes!

The Copier

  • Avoid copying. Other distribution means, such as bulletin boards, are just as effective. Attaching documents to emails is also an option.
  • Use Recycled Paper, which is cost competitive and will not jam the copier more than virgin paper (contrary to popular belief). For more information on environmentally friendly office supplies visit Georgia Tech's Green Purchasing Guide.
  • Make double sided copies and re-use single sided copies.
  • Save single sided copies for scratch paper. It is convenient to keep a box by your desk for easy access to scratch paper .
  • Turn your copier off at night and use its energy saving setting, which can reduce energy consumption by 65%.

The Fax Machine

  • Print onto scrap paper. Fax machines only print onto one side of the paper, so used paper suits them perfectly.
  • Eliminate cover sheets. A Post-It on the first or last page works just as well.
  • Don't print a confirmation sheet.
  • Email when possible or use your computer's built-in fax machine.
  • Turn your fax machine off at night.
  • Buy recycled plain fax paper.
